Dutch GP sets Formula 1 record

Even though Zandvoort is known for being difficult to overtake on, the recent race saw some of the most overtakes for a Formula 1 race ever.

The Dutch Grand Prix set a new Formula 1 record when 186 overtakes happened on track during the race. While the record is based on unofficial statistics (i.e. not directly from F1), it is a massive jump compared to previous years at Zandvoort, with just 23 in 2022. Part of the reason why the figures have been inflated was due to the changeable conditions, which saw many drivers on varying tyre strategies as the rain hit early on. Sergio Perez managed to overtake the entire field after diving into the pits on the opening lap, while Valtteri Bottas gained six positions on the greasy track in the early stages. The previous record was held by the Chinese Grand Prix in 2016, which saw 170 overtakes on track carried out. This was also down to the fact that a lot of the front runners started towards the rear of the grid. Positions gained on the first lap are not included in the figures, nor are positioned changed due to pit stops or drivers lapped in these figures.
