Adrian Newey's dual role as team principal and managing technical partner at Aston Martin has come under renewed scrutiny following the team's difficult start to the 2026 season.
The legendary designer assumed the team principal position in January, but reports emerged last week suggesting Jonathan Wheatley, who departed Audi on March 20 citing personal reasons, could be targeted for the role.
This would allow Newey to focus exclusively on technical development, the area where his genius has delivered countless championship-winning cars.
Aston Martin moved quickly to silence the speculation. Lawrence Stroll issued a statement reaffirming that Newey "is my partner and an important shareholder" and clarifying that the team operates differently from traditional structures.
"We don't currently adopt the traditional team principal role that you see elsewhere; it is by design," Stroll said.
The team added: "Adrian Newey continues to lead the team as Team Principal and Managing Technical Partner. The team will not be engaging in media speculation about its senior leadership team."
Yet the question remains whether Aston Martin's unconventional structure serves it best. Neither car has been a classified finisher in a race so far in 2026, with persistent Honda power unit issues hampering progress.
Wheatley's two decades working alongside Newey at Red Bull make him an obvious candidate — or could Aston Martin look elsewhere?
Former McLaren and Audi boss Andreas Seidl has been a reported option, as have Christian Horner and Max Verstappen's race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase.
With finances not an issue, could Stroll even look at options such as current McLaren team principal Andrea Stella, who turned the British outfit into multiple championship winners?
Does Aston Martin need a new team principal?
