Daniel Ricciardo produced one of the most memorable drives of his career at the 2018 Chinese Grand Prix, surging from sixth to first in just ten laps to claim a stunning victory at Shanghai.
The Australian's triumph hinged on a decisive strategy call under a safety car, deployed on lap 30 after Toro Rosso team-mates Pierre Gasly and Brendon Hartley collided at the penultimate corner.
While race leaders Valtteri Bottas and Sebastian Vettel had already passed the pit entry, Red Bull seized the opportunity to bring both Ricciardo and his team-mate Max Verstappen in for fresh soft tyres.
The pit stop dropped Ricciardo to sixth, but the fresher rubber provided an overwhelming pace advantage. What followed was a ruthless charge through the field.
Ricciardo dispatched Kimi Raikkonen on lap 37, then out-braked Lewis Hamilton into the chicane for third on lap 40. Two laps later, he swept past Vettel to move into second.
The decisive moment came on lap 45 when Ricciardo executed an audacious overtake on Bottas, going for a gap that only he saw to snatch the lead.
He held on to win by 8.894 seconds, later describing the move with the now-famous quote: "Sometimes, you've just got to lick the stamp and send it."
Ricciardo's route to victory was also made easier by a scrappy race for Verstappen.
A messy attempt to pass Hamilton allowed Ricciardo through for position, before the Dutchman ran deep into the hairpin on lap 43 while attempting to overtake Vettel at the hairpin.
The collision sent both drivers spinning, with Verstappen receiving a 10-second penalty that dropped him to fifth. Vettel's damaged floor caused him to tumble to eighth, reducing his championship lead from 17 points to nine.
