TWG Motorsports CEO Dan Towriss has revealed an intriguing stance, insisting that Colton Herta's progress will be judged more on his Formula 1 work than on his Formula 2 results.
In pursuit of a future seat at Cadillac in F1, Herta made the bold decision to leave IndyCar at the end of 2025 and signed as a test driver for the American outfit.
Herta has been spending time in Cadillac's F1 simulator and in the garage, while also competing in F2 for Hitech to learn the circuits on the calendar.
Alongside those commitments, Herta is making several first practice appearances this year, the first of which came earlier this season at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix.
The American's next outing in current F1 machinery will come in first practice in Hungary, with two further appearances scheduled for 2026.
Towriss and Cadillac have high hopes for Herta in his pursuit of reaching the pinnacle of motorsport.
As for his F2 results, which have so far been consistently in the midfield, Towriss is not overly concerned.
"For Colton it was all about learning – coming here learning tracks, tyres and that certainly is happening," Towriss said, as quoted by RACER.
"There've been some bumps in the road with the team, things haven't gone from a result standpoint as good as we would have hoped but I think that's to be expected and kind of just the way Formula 2 works, and bluntly where Hitech is at this point.
“So hopefully he'll continue to be able to show what he's capable of but I but I think also we're getting done what we needed to. He's learning what he needs to. In addition to what he's doing in F2 there's all the work that's being done in the F1 sim, and then he's got his first free practice under his belt – he did everything that the team asked of him in that session.
"We'll have another one coming up in Hungary and so we'll just continue to build that body of work that's necessary to show his readiness for Formula 1."
