The FIA has confirmed the comprehensive power unit change Mercedes has made to George Russell's car after he retired from the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.
Russell will have seven new components in the back of his W17 for the Singapore Grand Prix, consigning him to the back of the grid at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
In addition to a new internal combustion engine (ICE), Russell will have a new turbocharger (TC), exhaust set (EXH), motor generator unit-kinetic (MGU-K), energy store (ES) and control electronics unit (PU-CE).
As none of those components is within his existing allocation and has extended the pool, he will take a 10-place grid penalty for the first unit — as it will be his first power unit-related grid drop of the campaign — and a further five places for each of the rest.
He will also take an additional power unit ancillary component (PU-ANC), but that is only his fifth of six allowed.
Further adding to his misfortune, Mercedes has not been able to expedite its next ADUO upgrade, so Russell will be forced to take another grid penalty over the Americas triple header when that power unit update does arrive.
Deputy team principal Bradley Lord described the situation as a "double whammy" for the eight-time grand prix winner.
The British driver is currently 84 points behind team-mate Kimi Antonelli in the F1 drivers' championship standings, and can be expected to be even further behind after the round at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
With only five or six subsequent events remaining, Russell's title fight is essentially over.
