Former F1 driver axed as FIA steward after 'incompatible' ruling

This former F1 driver has long been involved in the F1 stewarding room - but the FIA has confirmed he will no longer take part in such activities.

The FIA has announced former F1 driver Johnny Herbert will no longer carry out steward duties at grand prix weekends.

Herbert has been a prominent figure in the stewarding room over the last 15 years.

The Briton's responsibilities involved deliberating over on-track clashes with a small panel of stewards and handing drivers penalties when necessary.

However, Herbert has also been a prominent figure in the media and has provided a series of interviews over the past year, delivering his thoughts on headline F1 matters.

The FIA has judged his media commitments cannot co-exist with his duties as a steward, leading the two to end their collaboration.

“It is with regret that we announce today that Johnny Herbert will no longer fulfil the position of F1 driver steward for the FIA,” read a statement from the FIA.

“Johnny is widely respected and brought invaluable experience and expertise to his role.

“However, after discussion, it was mutually agreed that his duties as an FIA steward and that of a media pundit were incompatible.

“We thank him for his service and wish him well in his future endeavours.”
