An unusual issue during sprint qualifying in Singapore has caused confusion and drama, resulting in a delay to the start of SQ2.
Towards the end of SQ1, the timing boards sparked uncertainty when they did not register the correct information as the drivers crossed the line.
It created an uncertain picture as to who had actually progressed into the second part of the session, and who was out of the running.
After several minutes, the timing boards suddenly updated, marking a considerable delay to the point in which the elimination order is normally confirmed.
The confusion prompted a delay to the start of SQ2, which got underway almost 20 minutes after the chequered flag was waved in SQ1.
A statement delivered by the FIA confirmed that the “start of SQ2 will be delayed due to an issue with timing systems, some lap times had not been registered. That is now resolved and the current timings are considered correct.”
While the session was able to resume, the FIA had cast doubt on that possibility, ending its statement with: “We are investigating whether we can proceed with the rest of the session.”
