Aston Martin has outlined its precautionary approach to Fernando Alonso's injury at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
The Silverstone-based squad communicated on Friday morning that Alonso had opted to sit out the opening practice outing of the weekend.
Alonso is being replaced by Felipe Drugovich, who gets his second FP1 outing of the season with the team.
Aston Martin detailed the little recovery time available after the Belgian Grand Prix has seen it take a more careful approach.
“Fernando developed this muscular problem after Spa,” Aston Martin chief trackside officer Mike Krack told media including RacingNews365.
“With the intensity of our calendar, there is never enough recovery time, even for sleep, because you have to travel.
“That is one of the issues. We elected to just increase the recovery time and drop out of FP1 which is normally the least important session.”
However, Krack expressed confidence that Alonso will return to the car in the afternoon.
“The plan is to have Fernando in the car from FP2 onward.”
When asked by RacingNews365 if the extra hours would make the difference, Krack highlighted the decision rests solely with having fewer laps to potentially aggravate the injury.
“I don't think it's the hours, it's more the lower amount of laps,” he said.
“We have obviously made some modifications to his seating position.
“We have checked some stuff, how to make it more comfortable for him. We are quite confident he will be fine.”
