It's no secret that Aston Martin has been one of the most improved Formula 1 teams in 2023, having gained 2.4s on track compared to last year. After finishing P7 in the Constructors' Championship last year, the team has produced a car capable of challenge for podiums and one that Alonso described as "a lovely car to drive" in the closing stages of the Bahrain Grand Prix. While one could be quick to point to the new aero regulations and allowances for each team coming into effect, Alonso believes Aston Martin has got itself into this position because it is the only team "willing to do whatever it takes" to win races. When asked by RacingNews365.com if the rules are having an influence on the order, Alonso responded: "I don't think so, no." "I think you need to have the vision and the ambition of Lawrence Stroll, or our leadership and our management because the opportunities are there for everybody but it seems that only one team is willing to do whatever it takes to win."
Verstappen: If you hire the right people, anything is possible
Alonso's comments come during a tricky period for Mercedes, whose team boss Toto Wolff openly admitted to designing the wrong car concept . The team also suffered numerous losses in the last couple of years in personnel leaving, with Aston Martin benefitting from a massive recruitment drive across the paddock since Lawrence Stroll took over in 2021. Max Verstappen highlighted the importance of having the "right people in charge" that want to win races. "Fernando's absolutely right. I think you mentioned all of it and I think it doesn't matter if it was the previous generation or this one," added Verstappen. "If you have the right people in charge, and they really want to win and they hire the right people, anything is possible."
