Zak Brown wants to see F1 select 20 permanent rounds on the calendar with a further eight events used as part of a rotation system.
The McLaren Racing CEO sees it as a way of the championship expanding into new markets without increasing the load of an already "pretty brutal schedule" for drivers, teams and those working in F1.
The length of the calendar and the demand for a spot on it have been a problem — albeit a positive one — plaguing the series for several years as it has continued to grow, but Brown's suggestion could be the right compromise.
At an event ahead of the Miami Grand Prix — attended by media, including RacingNews365 — Brown was asked what success looks like over the next five to ten years.
"Winning," the American joked before providing a more serious answer tailored to the health of F1: "The sport continuing to grow.
"I don't really see any headwinds other than what's going on around the world, so we'll all be sharing those same concerns. But the sport is just going from strength to strength."
Spa-Francorchamps and the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya will begin a rotational arrangement starting from next year, and Brown feels that approach could be further expanded.
The Portuguese Grand Prix will return — for at least two seasons — in 2027, and the Turkish Grand Prix will also be back next term, for a five-year stint at least.
And with South Africa, Thailand and South Korea all pushing for a spot on the schedule, places are at a premium, which is where Brown's idea comes in.
Whilst F1's current concorde deal permits up to 25 rounds, he is not a fan of expanding past the existing number of 24.
"There are countries lining up for grands prix," the 54-year-old added. "We can't... we're now having to get into alternating some grands prix.
"So, I think we need to, and I would be a fan of, locking in 20 permanent grands prix and then having maybe eight that rotate every other year.
"It's a way to expand geographically into 28 markets, but we can't race more than 24 times a year; it's a pretty brutal schedule."
