Williams has released a statement in the wake of the FIA rescinding the two penalty points Carlos Sainz was awarded following the Dutch Grand Prix.
The Spanish driver was found at fault for his clash with Liam Lawson during the race at Zandvoort, but the motorsport governing body has since downgraded it from a collision caused by the 31-year-old to a racing incident after a successful right of review from the Grove-based squad.
Whilst the FIA cannot alter the 10-second time penalty the four-time grand prix winner was given, as it was served during the race, the decision to expunge the two super licence penalty points from Sainz's record has been welcomed by the team.
"We are grateful to the stewards for reviewing Carlos' Zandvoort penalty and are pleased they have now decided he was not at fault and that this was a racing incident," Williams confirmed to media, including RacingNews365.
"While it is frustrating that our race was compromised by the original decision, mistakes are part of motor racing and we will continue to work constructively with the FIA to improve stewarding processes and review the racing rules for the future."
Sainz now only has two penalty points remaining on his FIA super licence.
