WATCH: Formula E field runs out of battery on last lap in Valencia

Nyck De Vries won the first Valencia E-Prix after a late safety car and subsequent recalculation of energy levels by race control caused nearly half the field to run out of power and fail to finish.

It was a bizarre end to the first Valencia E-Prix race of the weekend in Formula E as over half the field ran out of energy on the final lap after race control reduced the energy levels in cars by 19 kw/h which caused them to run out of juice.

Antonio Felix Da Costa of DS Techeetah had led the race from pole position the whole way through, but just as the cars were preparing to start the final lap after a late safety car it suddenly became clear that most teams would run out of power before crossing the line and be unable to finish, and the leader and others tumbled down the order, handing victory to Mercedes EQ's Nyck De Vries.
