Lando Norris has topped the opening practice session at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix weekend, as McLaren's upgraded car enjoyed a strong debut in Brazil.

The Woking-based squad is the only team to bring a substantial upgrade to Interlagos, and it looked rapid in Norris' hands, as he ended the session ahead of Kimi Antonelli.

The outing marked Antonelli's first event since being crowned world champion at the Mexico City Grand Prix a handful of days ago.

Max Verstappen was third for Red Bull, but noted some issues he was having during the 60-minute session, which related ot his gear shifts and steering.

Lewis Hamilton was fourth for Ferrari and was one of many drivers who had a rookie team-mate behind the wheel for the session.

Dino Beganonvic stood in for Charles Leclerc, who arrived late in Brazil following the birth of his daughter. Beganovic was only 21st, having been forced to abandon his hot lap due to an issue with his car.

George Russell was fifth in the second Mercedes, ahead of Isack Hadjar.

Gabriele Mini produced a highly respectable effort for Alpine as he ensured he ended the day as the fastest rookie in the session.

He managed to set a lap that was one-tenth faster than full-time driver Franco Colpainto, with one of the local favourites, Gabriel Bortoleto, lodged between the two Alpines.

Liam Lawson, who is still awaiting news about his F1 future, rounded out the top 10.

The FP1 outing was a crucial one for Colton Herta, who managed to clock 30 laps and finally secure enough points to obtain his F1 super licence.

Rafael Camara, who is making his F1 debut this weekend with Haas, ended the day in 18th place.

It was an early end to the session for Audi rookie Freddie Slater, who stood in for Nico Hulkenberg.

Just seven laps into his stint, Slater pulled to the side of the track as he reported an issue with the car, resulting in an early red flag.

He was not the only driver who was forced to pull over, as Alex Albon stopped with just under 20 minutes in the session - however, his car was able to be cleared with a red flag intervention.
