Toto Wolff has offered a glimpse into the difference of opinion that led to Esteban Ocon's axe by Haas over last weekend's Mexico City Grand Prix.

Haas confirmed on Saturday morning that Ocon would not drive for the team for the remainder of the weekend.

The decision followed a heated radio exchange during second practice in Mexico, when Ocon contested a call from engineer Laura Mueller to switch his high-fuel run from soft to medium tyres. It is understood the situation escalated in the Friday debrief with team principal Ayao Komatsu, who has refused to go into detail on what was said.

Ryo Hirakawa deputised for Ocon across the remainder of the weekend at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. After post-race penalties were handed out, the Japanese collected a point for a 10th-place finish.

On Tuesday, Haas announced Ocon would not drive for the team in the remaining four grands prix of the season, bringing his time with Haas to an abrupt end.

For this weekend, Rafael Camara, previously announced as Ocon's replacement for next season, will make his F1 debut in front of his home crowd in the São Paulo Grand Prix.

Wolff, who has known Ocon since his junior career, is the first senior paddock figure to speak publicly about the breakdown, framing it as a clash between Komatsu's need to protect his team and Ocon's conviction that he had done nothing wrong.

Speaking about the situation to the media, including RacingNews365, Mercedes team principal Wolff said Komatsu had been left with no choice but to act.

"At the end it came to the point where Ayao needed to represent the team and protect the team from certain rhetoric," said Wolff.

"On the other side, Esteban felt that personally, he wasn't wrong in the things he said.

"You've got to respect that in the end the team calls the shots. The team principal needs to decide when it's enough, and that is what Ayao did."

Wolff details remarkable Vasseur deal for Ocon big break

Wolff's comments carry weight given his long history with Ocon, stretching back to the Frenchman's junior single-seater days. The Austrian explained how Mercedes first took on managing Ocon's career through driver development advisor Gwen Lagrue, before helping fund his route into Formula 1.

"So at Mercedes, we picked up the management of Esteban, due to Gwen," said Wolff. "That's how we got to know Gwen, when Gravity defaulted, and then we agreed to work with Fred [Vasseur] in GP3. We won the championship together.

"Then there wasn't really an opportunity in Formula One. Then the DTM door opened, and we did that together."

Then detailing a remarkable situation between Mercedes and Vasseur that helped give Ocon his F1 break, Wolff said: "I don't know if this is known, when suddenly there appeared to be a free seat at Manor from Spa onwards [2016 Belgian GP], it needed $2 million.

"We said we could provide $1 million for that seat, but we were missing $1 million, and Fred put the money in personally to give Esteban the opportunity.

"Over all those years, I think we were all very supportive and very strong in trying to make sure that Esteban would have the best possible opportunity."
