Video: How an F1 drinks system works

It is important for Formula 1 drivers to stay hydrated during the race, which is why they have a drinks system onboard their car.

It is not uncommon to hear drivers being reminded to "drink" by their engineer over team radio in Formula 1.

While this is not a game being played to pass time before the next overtake or pit-stop, it is a vital piece of information to ensure that the drivers stay hydrated during the race.

This is due to the amount of fluids – and subsequently weight – they can lose during a race, which can be anywhere between 2 and 3.5 kilograms.

The drinks system connects to a driver's helmet and dispenses a fluid of the driver's choice via a tube. This can be connected and disconnected when they enter and exit the car; often you will see a splash of water when they exit at the end of a race.

Check out the video below of Mercedes Race Team Project Coordinator, Chris King, talking through the system with Simulation and Demonstration Driver, Anthony Davidson.
