Red Bull fires George Russell social media dig after retirement reaction

Red Bull fired a dig at George Russell on social media after the Briton retired from the Canadian Grand Prix following a shock Mercedes power unit failure.

Russell had been leading in Montreal after an excellent battle with eventual race winner Kimi Antonelli before his Mercedes W17 completely shut down on lap 30.

It triggered an immediate reaction from Russell, who sat in his car in complete disbelief before throwing out his headrest ahead of the car being recovered by marshals.

Russell's reaction to the retirement quickly circulated on social media, with Red Bull opting to comment on a fan's post about the Mercedes driver.

A fan on X posted an image of Russell's car stopped at the side of the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve and captioned it: "George throwing the headrest is taking me outttt."

Red Bull's social media admin commented on the post: "Borderline something something."

The comment was a reference to Russell's feud with Max Verstappen in 2024, which ignited after qualifying for the Qatar Grand Prix.

In Qatar, Verstappen was handed a one-place grid penalty for unnecessarily slowing down ahead of Russell.

However, tensions between the duo escalated while they were in the stewards' room discussing the incident, with the four-time world champion believing Russell was attempting to get him penalised.

For his part, Russell claimed that the Red Bull driver threatened to "purposefully go out of his way to crash into me and 'put me on my head in the wall'".

A week later in Abu Dhabi, Russell added: "As soon as something doesn't go his way, he lashes out with unnecessary anger and borderline violence."
