George Russell has apologised to F1 marshals on social media after throwing his headrest onto the track during the Canadian Grand Prix.

Russell’s race came to an abrupt end on lap 30 when a major power unit failure forced him to retire following an intense battle with title rival Kimi Antonelli.

Frustrated by the sudden setback, the Mercedes driver threw his headrest onto the circuit before climbing out of the car.

The incident attracted the attention of the stewards, who investigated Russell after the race and handed him a €5,000 fine, suspended for 12 months.

Russell apologised during the stewards’ hearing and admitted he felt “embarrassed” by his actions.

On Monday, the Briton took to social media to issue a brief message of apology directed specifically at the trackside marshals.

“Apologies to the marshals & FIA for making their job harder than it needed to be,” Russell stated.

“Lots of emotions in the moment.”

Russell's non-finish gifted victory to team-mate Kimi Antonelli, who scored his fourth successive grand prix victory.

The Italian now holds a 43-point lead over Russell in the drivers' championship.
