Jos Verstappen has detailed the lessons he taught son, Max, following his own Formula 1 struggles against Michael Schumacher.
The 52-year-old partnered the seven-time world champion at Benetton in 1994, the season in which Schumacher claimed his first F1 title.
Unlike his son, Verstappen Sr's F1 career failed to scale any heights, scoring just two podiums - in 1994 - across 106 starts.
Unfortunately, his career is often remembered for his car turning into a fireball at the 1994 German Grand Prix during a pit stop.
Schumacher was comfortably stronger than the Dutch driver, who has passed on to his son what losing to the F1 legend taught him.
"That was very important," Jos told F1-Insider. "To be honest, I'm not proud of my career. People remember me because I was in the fireball at Hockenheim in 1994.
"My car caught fire then whilst refuelling. I made mistakes. My Benetton team-mate was Michael Schumacher. He was extremely fast, extremely talented and the top driver in the team.
"I wanted to drive as fast as him, especially in the race. But I couldn't do that with my limited experience at that time.
"That's why I made mistakes. I wanted to bang my head against a wall. I gave Max the message not to make this mistake."

Max and Schumacher's similarities
Despite Schumacher having a clear edge over Verstappen, the pair built a strong friendship and remained on good terms long after being team-mates.
It resulted in Jos and Max spending considerable time with Schumacher and his son, former Haas driver, Mick.
As revealed by the older Verstappen, the current reigning champion was given great advice by the 91-time race winner, who he shares similarities with.
"Always good," remarked Verstappen Sr on Schumacher. "He made an effort, even after his career. We often went karting with our children, Mick and Max. Michael didn't discriminate between them.
"If he had something to say, he said something to both of them. It is quite possible that Max also benefited from these experiences.
"Max has much in common with Michael: uncompromising on the track, but kind, sensitive and caring as a person in private life."
