Toto Wolff has quashed the possibility of Max Verstappen replacing George Russell at Mercedes for the 2027 F1 season.
Speaking at the Austrian Grand Prix, Wolff expressed his desire to see his driver lineup of the Briton and Kimi Antonelli remain unchanged at the end of the campaign, despite the persistent speculation linking the four-time F1 drivers' champion with a move away from Red Bull.
Wolff missed out on Verstappen at the advent of the Dutchman's F1 career and has publicly courted the 28-year-old over the past couple of seasons, and has engaged his camp in talks as well.
With Antonelli — who has a 50-point advantage over Russell in the drivers' championship standings — having now established himself within the Brackley-based team, that has left his team-mate in a precarious position, given their boss's long-held admiration for Verstappen and his hope for the 71-time grand prix winner to race for him one day.
Despite a strong 2025, Russell has endured considerable bad luck this term and is now having to fight against an increasingly impressive Antonelli, who has not only capitalised on the British driver's misfortune but also erased the performance delta between the pair over the winter.
The latter's pace last season saw him secure a well-earned driver option in the contract extension he signed towards the backend of the year, and over the weekend at the Red Bull Ring, he has confirmed that he will stay put with the eight-time constructors' champions in 2027.
That coincides with Wolff's feelings on the matter, with the Austrian revealing that he has told Russell that the current driver pairing is "good" for the Silver Arrows.
"Yeah, we don't want to change things, and I've also said to George that I think it's a lineup that is good for us," the Mercedes team principal told Sky Sports F1.
"We're very happy with the two of them."
Whilst the 54-year-old has ruled Mercedes out of the running for Verstappen, who holds break clauses in his Red Bull contract that is due to expire at the end of 2028, rumours linking him to McLaren persist.
Though such reports are unfounded at this stage, and McLaren CEO Zak Brown has moved to shut them down, the assumption is that Oscar Piastri would head in the opposite direction.
The speculation is aided by Verstappen's race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase joining McLaren in the future as the Woking-based squad's chief racing officer.
