Toto Wolff has identified keeping the rear tyres under control as a "critical" factor in Mercedes' chances of securing a stunning Singapore upset.
George Russell roared to pole position at Marina Bay, with the team not expected to perform well owing to the hot, humid, bumpy conditions of Singapore, with the W16 traditionally favouring cold and smooth tracks, such as Las Vegas or Montreal.
The team has deployed a new front-wing as it looks to cement second place in the constructors' championship, currently holding a four-point lead over Ferrari and 18 over Red Bull, with Kimi Antonelli backing Russell's performance up with fourth on the grid - his best result since third in Miami.
Reflecting on the session, Wolff explained how controlling the rear tyre temperatures would make or break Mercedes' chances of a second grand prix win of the season, after Russell in Canada.
"The improvements we made to the car overnight certainly helped both drivers," Wolff explained.
"After his accident in FP2, George spent FP3 and Q1 building his confidence with the car, he always had more margin to push and used that when it mattered to produce two stunning laps in Q3.
"He has been incredibly strong all year, and this was yet another great performance.
"We have only managed one long run so far this weekend, so there are plenty of unknowns heading into the race.
"Looking after the rear tyres is critical for a good result, and hopefully we have taken a step forward with that with recent upgrades.
"If we can do so, and given our starting positions, then we can look forward to a competitive showing."
