Toto Wolff has backed George Russell to bounce back at the Canadian Grand Prix, predicting the Mercedes driver will make "life difficult" for his rivals after a challenging weekend in Miami.

Russell has been overshadowed by Kimi Antonelli in recent rounds, with the 19-year-old Italian winning three consecutive grands prix to open up a 20-point championship lead over the British driver.

The eight-time constructors' champion has dominated the early stages of the campaign, winning all four grands prix and building a commanding 70-point advantage over Ferrari in the standings, but Antonelli has been the clear star performer.

Russell won the season-opener in Australia but has since finished second in China and fourth in both Japan and Miami, whilst Antonelli has claimed victory at the Chinese, Japanese and Miami Grands Prix to establish himself as the title favourite.

"What we love about this sport is that the clock never lies at the end of the race, and the clock says Kimi deservedly won the last three grands prix," the Mercedes team principal told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Russell's struggles, however, have not been entirely of his own making. At the Chinese Grand Prix, he suffered an electrical fault that left his car stuck in first gear during Q3, though he recovered to finish second, where he stayed in the race behind Antonelli.

In Japan, an unsuccessful setup change left him on the back foot from the outset. He was, however, in a promising position, putting pressure on Oscar Piastri out front when an ill-timed safety car ruined his chances.

He also encountered battery charging issues at the safety car restart that cost him track position. He eventually finished fourth, more than 15 seconds behind the other, race-winning Mercedes.

Miami proved particularly difficult for the 28-year-old, who struggled with car balance and overheating tyres through the twisty middle section of the circuit. He qualified fifth and finished fourth, 43 seconds behind his triumphant team-mate.

At the Canadian Grand Prix, Russell will be looking to close the gap to Antonelli in what has become an unexpected intra-team championship battle at Mercedes.

And Wolff remains confident Russell will rediscover his best form at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, citing bad luck and team-related problems alongside the Briton's own errors at Miami.

"Russell hasn't done as well, in some cases due to team problems, or bad luck, and in Miami due to his own mistakes," the Austrian added.

"That said, we know George's value, and we know he'll return, starting from Canada, very competitive and ready to make life difficult for his opponents."
