Charles Leclerc hit with Ferrari engine handicap at new Spanish GP

How much of a problem will this be for Charles Leclerc across the weekend at F1's newest track?

Ferrari has been forced to revert to an old-specification power unit in Charles Leclerc's SF-26 for this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix at F1's newest venue.

It is understood that Ferrari's hand has been forced following Leclerc's 60g smash on lap two of Sunday's Italian Grand Prix at Monza.

The Monégasque driver had started from third on the grid, with the hope of a podium finish, only to make an error through the Parabolica, leading to a heavy shunt into a tyre barrier.

Ferrari had only recently taken advantage of the latest ADUO [additional development upgrade opportunities] update from the FIA and upgraded its engine going into its home race. It was Ferrari's first PU update this season.

But in light of that crash, Ferrari has opted to fit a pre-ADUO PU from its pool.

It remains to be seen how much Leclerc will be handicapped by the decision around the 22-corner Madring circuit that has taken up the Spanish GP contract for the next 10 years, replacing Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya.

It is understood that the ADUO-updated PU will be in Leclerc's car for the next race in Azerbaijan in a fortnight.
