George Russell is preparing to start from pole position for the first time in his F1 career after storming to pole position for the Hungarian Grand Prix.

After a challenging pair of Friday practice sessions, Russell and Mercedes sprung a surprise to beat Ferrari pair Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc to top spot.

Leclerc has a golden opportunity to recover some lost ground to Max Verstappen after his French GP crash, with the Dutchman starting back in 10th.

Verstappen had been in the mix at the front of the field in Q1 and Q2, but a mistake on his first Q3 lap and a subsequent power issue ruined his chances.

McLaren's Lando Norris capitalised to take fourth for McLaren, ahead of Alpine pair Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso, and the other Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton – the seven-time World Champion hampered by a DRS issue on his final effort.

Valtteri Bottas (Alfa Romeo) and Daniel Ricciardo (McLaren) will also start ahead of Verstappen, with the latter's teammate, Sergio Perez, 11th.

Pierre Gasly will start the race from the pit lane after taking on an array of new power unit elements and exceeding his allocation for the season.

The starting grid below is provisional until confirmed by the FIA.
