Max Verstappen is the reigning four-time F1 world champion, but if he wants to compete at the highest level at the famous Nürburgring Nordschleife, he will first need to complete several crucial steps.
The goal is to compete in races with his own team, Verstappen.com Racing, for which Emil Frey Racing operates the Ferrari 296 GT3, amongst others.
To achieve that objective, he will first need to show the German motorsport association DMSB what racing calibre he possesses and sit a theoretical examination on Friday, through which he can earn a Grade B Permit.
With that 'B-licence', he is permitted to compete in races using cars that carry the 'category B' classification.
The Porsche Cayman GT4 from Lionspeed GP, which they have in mind, is such a car from that category. These are cars with a power-to-weight ratio of more than 4.2 kg/bhp.
With that car, drivers must normally run at least two races, covering a minimum of 14 laps.
This must cover more than 20% of the total race time and takes into account how a driver navigates and handles traffic.
In specific, individual cases, however, a panel of judges may also determine that a driver is good enough for a Grade A Permit based on one race.
Alternatively, the rules may allow a driver to compete in one race for two different teams and thus complete the required number of laps.
If this is met, Verstappen will qualify for the Grade A permit, after which he can enter GT3 cars and eventually fulfil his dream of competing in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring.
