Red Bull reveal Max Verstappen impact on 'quite spectacular' situation

Red Bull has enjoyed a strong uptick in performance across the last handful of races, with Max Verstappen playing a major role in the turnaround.

Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies has highlighted the impact Max Verstappen has had on the squad's recent turnaround in form.

The Milton Keynes-based squad has won two out of the last three grands prix, a significant upturn in performance from the European leg of the season when Verstappen took two podiums in eight races.

Red Bull has not been a championship threat this year with McLaren largely dominating at the front - however it has not won at the last three events.

Mekies has hailed the effort of the Red Bull team to pull itself back into front-running form and indicated Verstappen had a big role to play.

"I think everybody has been working extremely hard in Milton Keynes, from race one to now, and never giving up on trying to unlock the potential of that car,” Mekies told media including RacingNews365.

“It is fair to say that the progress in the last few weeks has been quite spectacular.

"And it's credit to everyone, again, back at home, who have never given up.

“It’s credit to Max, who has been, with his sensitivity, pushing us to explore different avenues.

“Finally, we found an avenue that unlocked a bit of performance.”

Mekies is confident Red Bull can now pose a threat at each of the remaining six events on the F1 schedule, but is not getting caught up in wondering what might have been for the team if it had made improvements earlier.

"There is no single silver bullet,” he said. “There have been a good flow of updates. There have been different ways to run the car.

“Altogether, it seems we have a competitive package on most tracks.

“But it’s very difficult to wind back and say ‘with the upgrades at the beginning of the year, where would you be?’

“We are not looking back, we are looking forward.”
