Red Bull demands 'nerves of steel' as Max Verstappen targets 'sensational' recovery

Red Bull must have "nerves of steel" in the closing rounds of the F1 season for Max Verstappen to retain his title, says Helmut Marko.

Red Bull adviser Helmut Marko believes "nuances" will determine who wins the 2025 F1 drivers' championship, with Max Verstappen fighting to come back against Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.

The McLaren team-mates appeared to have a stranglehold on the title fight, but a late-season resurgence from Red Bull has thrust the Dutchman back into contention.

With four rounds remaining, the four-time F1 drivers' champion trails Norris by 36 points and Piastri by 35 but remains an outside bet at claiming his fifth crown.

If he can do so, he will match the streak Michael Schumacher achieved with Ferrari between 2000 and 2004.

Reflecting on the considerable task facing the Milton Keynes-based squad, Marko told sports.de: "We believe in it. We have the will and a small chance.

The 82-year-old compared it to Sebastian Vettel's first championship, in 2010, and his third two years later — both of which saw the German come from behind to clinch title glory.

"In 2010 we managed it in the last race, in 2012 as well, and in 2021 Verstappen became world champion in the last lap," Marko added.

Regardless of whether the 68-time grand prix winner outlasts the two McLaren drivers, coming from 104 points back to just 35 in just five rounds has made a clear statement.

To Marko, Verstappen has "already achieved some special feats, but if he manages this comeback, that would be particularly sensational."

The Austrian is adamant it will be a case of limiting errors and holding nerve, arguing it will come down to finer details.

"Now it's a matter of having nerves of steel and not making any mistakes. Nuances will decide it," he concluded.
