Liam Lawson handed unexpected F1 debut as chaos reigns - On This Day

Few debut weekends in recent F1 memory have been quite as baptismal as Liam Lawson's at Zandvoort in 2023. 

The New Zealander was thrust into the AlphaTauri cockpit after Daniel Ricciardo broke a metacarpal bone in his left hand during a FP2 crash, leaving the team scrambling for a replacement with barely hours to spare.

Lawson, Red Bull's reserve driver at the time, was already in the paddock and had attended the drivers' briefing as a precaution following news of Ricciardo's injury. By Friday evening, it was confirmed: he would race. 

With only FP3 ahead of qualifying to familiarise himself with a car he had barely driven in anger, the scale of the task was enormous.

Lawson qualified last, recording a 1:23.420 in Q1, and lined up 19th on the grid after penalties shuffled others around. Then the weather arrived. Rain peppered the circuit intermittently from the start, creating strategic chaos that swallowed up seasoned veterans, let alone a rookie on his first grand prix Sunday. 

Lawson later reflected on the experience in stark terms: "I don't think it's good memories, because my memories of that weekend, most of them were just fear and pressure."

The race itself was a survival exercise for the entire field. Logan Sargeant crashed his Williams to trigger a safety car, Charles Leclerc retired, and a heavy downpour with eight laps remaining sent Zhou Guanyu into the barriers at Turn 1, causing a red flag. 

Max Verstappen, as ever at Zandvoort, controlled proceedings to claim his ninth consecutive victory, equalling Sebastian Vettel's record. Fernando Alonso took second, while Pierre Gasly inherited the final podium spot after Sergio Pérez was penalised for speeding in the pit lane.

Through all of it, Lawson kept his head. He crossed the line 13th, finishing ahead of his far more experienced team-mate Yuki Tsunoda. 

"I feel like I had experience of every situation in that race with multiple pitstops, wheel-to-wheel racing, rain, dry," he said afterwards. "So it was a good learning experience."
