Former Haas F1 team principal Guenther Steiner has backed Oscar Piastri to win the F1 drivers' title, but has warned him that further "mistakes" cannot be made.

The Australian has not secured a victory since the Spanish Grand Prix, whilst team-mate and title rival Lando Norris has won two of the last three races.

Piastri would have win in Silverstone had he not been handed a 10-second time penalty for 'erratic braking', which handed a home victory to Norris.

As a result of Norris leading a McLaren one-two in the last two races, Piastri's advantage in the drivers' title has decreased to just eight points.

In the McLaren camp, it is Norris with the current momentum, having recovered brilliantly since crashing into Piastri in Canada.

Steiner has recognised Norris' current impressive form and that the Briton is waiting for Piastri to make further mistakes; however, the Italian still backs Piastri for the crown.

"I think Lando did a very good job in Austria," Steiner told the Red Flags podcast. "He did a good good job in Silverstone, obviously, with the help of Oscar.

"But for me, the favourite is still Oscar, but I think Lando got a lot of confidence back in the last two races for himself, and that will help him.

"So in the moment, Oscar cannot allow himself to make mistakes anymore, because Lando now is there waiting for Oscar to make mistakes. So it's not over, my favourite is still Oscar.

"But, you never know, but obviously, behind them, there's nobody anymore which can challenge them. That's the reality of it."
