Oscar Piastri is wary of the performance the upgrade package will provide to Mercedes when F1 resumes in two weeks.
Whilst McLaren, Red Bull and Ferrari all rolled out cars sporting a range of updates for the recent Miami Grand Prix, the W17s of championship leaders Mercedes carried only token new components.
The team made clear before the extended break throughout April that it would be targeting the Canadian Grand Prix as the race where it would unveil its first major upgrade of the campaign.
Although McLaren made inroads into Mercedes' overall pace advantage with its improved MCL40, Kimi Antonelli still won a third consecutive grand prix to stretch his lead over team-mate George Russell to 20 points in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' championship, McLaren managed to outscore Mercedes by three points across the Miami sprint weekend to close the gap to 86 points.
Piastri knows, however, that such gains could be negated if Mercedes manages to significantly improve its cars with whatever it reveals in Montréal.
"It’s going to be interesting to see," said Piastri, speaking to the media, including RacingNews365.
"We need to see where we stack up at a few different tracks. In the sprint [in Miami], to have a one-two on pure pace, that was a pretty big surprise for us. So things are working well.
"We expected the upgrades to be a good step forward, and they have been, and hopefully they are again in Canada.
"But, obviously, Mercedes didn’t bring a lot, and they also have an upgrade package for Canada, so we’ll have to wait and see how much that’s worth for them."
