Lando Norris narrowly missed out on a chance to unseat Red Bull's run of poles in 2023, after qualifying on the front row for the British Grand Prix. The McLaren driver put in a lap that was good enough for a shock front row start, after provisionally setting the quickest lap time in Q3 in the closing stages. This caused an eruption of cheers from the home crowd, before Max Verstappen resumed his usual form and went two tenths quicker. This led to another pantomime reaction from the crowd, with Norris joking after he got out of the car: "It's always Max, he always ruins everything for everyone!"
Norris put together 'insane' last lap
The conditions were tricky to judge in qualifying owing to rain that was hitting the track at various stages, causing varying degrees of grip levels. Both McLaren drivers nearly dropped out in Q1, but put together laps that saw them through to the end of the session. "Two tenths to P1 in Q3 so pretty insane and my last lap was a good lap," said Norris. "I could hear Zak on the radio on the in-lap which is the best thing ever. "Great I guess from myself, but also from both of us to be second and third is pretty amazing for the whole team."
