Lando Norris received a rare 10-second stop/go penalty during the Qatar Grand Prix, hurting McLaren in the F1 constructors' title fight. Norris started in third at the Lusail International Circuit and made an excellent start, overtaking George Russell into the first corner. The McLaren driver settled into the race in second, behind rival Max Verstappen. Less than two seconds split the pair throughout the race, until Norris received the huge penalty on lap 44/57. He was investigated for failing to slow under yellow flags down the start/finish straight, due to Kevin Magnussen's wing mirror having fallen onto the circuit. Verstappen quickly complained that Norris had failed to slow down, with the race stewards having presented Norris with a heavy punishment. When Norris served his penalty, he rejoined in last but did recover to score one-point in 10th. However, it promoted Ferrari's Charles Leclerc into second, with Oscar Piastri finishing in third. Carlos Sainz claimed sixth, resulting in McLaren's advantage in the title being reduced to just 21 points. As a result, it will be decided in the Abu Dhabi season finale.
