Lando Norris has broken a McLaren record set by Lewis Hamilton, by becoming the team's highest-point scorer.

The 24-year-old surpassed the seven-time world champion's points tally for McLaren after finishing fourth in last weekend's United States Grand Prix.

Norris had crossed the finish-line in third but dropped to fourth behind Max Verstappen as a result of a five-second time penalty.

A time penalty was handed to Norris after he gained an advantage off the circuit and overtook Verstappen. The incident occurred on lap 52 at Turn 12, whilst battling the Dutchman.

Both drivers went off the circuit; however, as mentioned, Norris rejoined ahead. He has slipped to 57 points behind the Red Bull driver in the championship but does at least have a McLaren record to his name.

Finishing fourth saw Norris move to 930 points scored for McLaren, surpassing the 913 Hamilton amassed for the Woking-based team.

However, it should be noted that for the first three seasons of Hamilton's stay at McLaren, only 10 points were awarded to the winner of the race, whilst points were only awarded to the top eight.

The current point system was introduced in 2010.
