Twenty-two years ago today, Valentino Rossi fulfilled a lifelong dream when he climbed aboard Ferrari's F2004 for his first Formula 1 test at Fiorano.
The MotoGP legend, fresh from winning the opening round of the 2004 season at Welkom just three days earlier on his Yamaha debut, arrived at Ferrari's private test track to sample four wheels.
Sharing the circuit with Michael Schumacher and Luca Badoer, who were preparing ahead of the San Marino Grand Prix, Rossi immediately set about learning the ropes of Formula 1 machinery.
What followed exceeded even Ferrari's expectations. The Italian lapped just 0.7 seconds slower than Schumacher's benchmark, a remarkable performance for someone with no prior F1 experience.
Some reports suggested the gap was closer to three seconds, but either way, the speed was there. Ferrari team members were said to be stunned by his pace, whilst Schumacher himself wore a shocked expression as he reviewed Rossi's telemetry data.
Rossi even wore one of Schumacher's spare helmets as a mark of respect to his friend, a gesture that underlined the mutual admiration between two of motorsport's most decorated champions.
"Driving an F1 car was an amazing experience and it was great for me to follow in Schumacher's footsteps for a day," Rossi said afterwards. "I would like to thank Ferrari for having given me this opportunity."
Schumacher was equally complimentary, noting: "Of course, it took him a while to get used to it, but he was very impressive by the end of the day.
“I know he has done some karting, but at the end of the day, when you have racing in your blood, you know what to do."
That first test sparked what became a series of F1 outings for Rossi with Ferrari over subsequent years, culminating in more serious discussions around a potential switch in 2006.
Ultimately, the MotoGP icon chose to remain on two wheels.
