Max Verstappen refuses question over race ban fear

Max Verstappen's threat of a race ban will reduce following this weekend's Austrian Grand Prix, but only if he can get through it without collecting a penalty point.

Max Verstappen refused to answer a question during the drivers' press conference ahead of this weekend's Austrian Grand Prix, in fear of receiving a penalty point from the FIA.  The four-time world champion remains just a single penalty point away from being handed a race ban; however, two points will be removed from his super license after this weekend.  Should he navigate Red Bull's home event without receiving a penalty point, Verstappen's total will reduce to nine – it currently sits at 11, with 12 being needed for a race ban. As a result, the reigning world champion was careful with his answers during the pre-weekend press conference, yet decided against answering one in particular.  Verstappen was joined in the opening press conference by Pierre Gasly and Isack Hadjar, with all three having been asked whether the racing in F1 has become less natural due to how the championship is regulated. Gasly and Hadjar both answered, before Verstappen said: "I'm not going to comment on that, I cannot risk getting a penalty point." The Red Bull Ring has been a formidable venue for the Dutchman during his F1 career, with five victories having been claimed on Austrian soil. Securing a fifth this weekend will be a tall order, something Verstappen does recognise. "Well, there are no guarantees," added Verstappen. "We'll always, of course, try to do our best. In the past, yes, we've had a lot of great races here. Some, I think back then, were also unexpected wins.  "So in a way, maybe, we come into this weekend again not as favourites, for sure. But I know that, myself and the team will always try to to optimise everything that we can.  "It looks like quite a warm weekend as well. So it's going to be tough to make the tyres last anyway, but I'm excited. I'm here to to do the best I can. And, of course, I hope to be on the podium."
