Max Verstappen has moved to just one point from an F1 race ban following a controversial Spanish Grand Prix collision with George Russell.
On the late safety car restart, on the hard tyres, Verstappen was swamped by Charles Leclerc and then pushed wide by Russell at Turn 1.
Later when told to let Russell back through by engineer Gianpiero Lambiase, Verstappen let Russell through at Turn 4, but then rammed into the Mercedes at Turn 5, on purpose.
For this, he received a 10-second penalty which dropped him from fifth to 10th on the road, but being on eight penalty points, for causing a collision, he was then handed three further points on his licence.
It means Verstappen is now just 1 point from the 12 points which automatically trigger a race ban.
Verstappen's next set of points comes off after the Austrian GP, on June 30th, meaning he must navigate the Canadian and Austrian GP weekends on the cusp of a ban.
He would be the first-ever reigning world champion to be banned if he is handed a point in either Montreal or at the Red Bull Ring.
