Max Verstappen has insisted he retains “a lot of confidence” in Red Bull despite its lacklustre start to the new F1 campaign.
The Milton Keynes-based squad has failed to place itself at the head of the pecking order this year, with Mercedes establishing a firm lead over the competition.
It has also suffered two DNF's in the opening two rounds, with Isack Hadjar retiring in Australia before Verstappen was forced to park up last time out in China.
Despite the setbacks, Verstappen is optimistic about the procedures Red Bull has in place to get back to the front of the field.
"The first two races have been a bit more challenging than we would have liked and it was unfortunate that we had to retire the car in China with an ERS cooling issue,” the four-time champion said.
“There is still a lot to do, however, I have a lot of confidence in the team and they have reviewed these issues and have been working hard to optimise the performance of the car.”
The third round of the F1 campaign takes place this weekend around the Suzuka Circuit, home of the Japanese GP.
Verstappen secured victory at the event 12 months ago - a scenario that looks less likely this year given Red Bull's struggles.
“Heading into Suzuka, this is one of my favourite tracks to race at, with lots of high-speed corners,” Verstappen added.
“There is a lot of history at this circuit for the team and it is one I always look forward to coming back to.
“It is nice to also spend a bit of time in Tokyo before heading to Suzuka, so we are looking forward to a couple of days there too."
