The mayor of Madrid has hit out at rumours of the grand prix being cancelled, labelling them as "fake news."
From 2026, the Spanish GP is moving to a new street circuit in the capital, taking over official duties from Barcelona, with the race set to run back-to-back with the Italian GP at Monza in September.
However, rumours have appeared online stating that the race could be cancelled owing to delays in construction, with Imola touted as a possible replacement should the event fall through.
However, the mayor of Madrid has categorically denied the rumours.
The idea of a potential cancellation is "unbelievable and absurd", with Motorsport Total also reporting that organisers have labelled the rumour as "fake news and completely unfounded."
"On the 12th of September 2026, there will be a Formula 1 race in Madrid ", the mayor of Madrid, Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida, is quoted as saying.
"I don't know where this news comes from, but the construction of the course is ahead of schedule and is going smoothly.
"And Madrid, despite some reservations and the annoyance of some, will host a grand prix that will be among the best, if not the best.
"The sponsors are on board, and the construction of the route is progressing. So I'm sorry, but on September 12th next year, Formula 1 will be run in Madrid, and it will be a complete success."
