F1 CEO responds to V8 engine return plan

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has weighed in on the possibility of the sport returning to V8 engines in the next few years.

The plan was first raised by FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who is keen to see their return to work in tandem with sustainable fuels.

Many of the current F1 teams have voiced their support for the idea, with drivers also keen on the plan.

Ben Sulayem has suggested that the re-introduction of the V8s could come as early as the 2030 season.

When asked how strong he believes the possibility to be, Domenicali told De Telegraaf: “I think quite big. The president of the FIA ​ really wants that and we support him in that. 

“Of course, everything still needs to be worked out. But I think we are all heading in the right direction in that regard.”

F1 is currently in its first year of a new engine cycle, but the 2026 units have not had an overwhelmingly positive verdict from the drivers.

Domenicali suggested that drivers will be listened to more closely going forward to ensure they have an input.

“I always listen to the drivers; they are our crown jewels,” he said.

“I have always said that, and I will always continue to do so. If you look at the current engines now: we must not forget that these current models come from the manufacturers. 

“Years ago, they wanted to go in this direction, and for us, it was essentially take it or leave it . The world evolves, and so does the sport.”
