Liam Lawson has confirmed he apologised to Pierre Gasly after their clash during the Miami Grand Prix.

The duo were battling for the final points-paying position early in the grand prix, with Lawson attempting to move ahead at Turn 17.

However, his Racing Bulls car locked up and speared into Gasly, who was tipped upside down before coming to a halt against the barrier.

Lawson detailed that he suffered a gearbox failure, which triggered the crash.

“I went to brake for the last corner, and when I hit the brakes, we had a gearbox failure,” Lawson told media including RacingNews365.

“I lost it, went straight to neutral, and I couldn't downshift and slow the car down.

“It's a shame, it's obviously taken out Pierre, which is not good. They were having a great weekend.”

The fault with the car absolved Lawson of any blame and ensured he didn't pick up a penalty.

Nevertheless, the New Zealander sought out Gasly after their retirements to explain the situation and make amends.

“I went and saw him to apologise,” he said. “Obviously, they've had a great weekend.

“I wanted to explain to him that I wasn't intentionally trying to push the braking like that.

“I just had no gearbox and no brakes.”

While Gasly retired, team-mate Franco Colapinto went on to secure a career-best result in seventh.
