Pierre Gasly causes Monza shock with stunning pole position

Pierre Gasly has taken pole position for the Italian Grand Prix, the first of his F1 career.

The Frenchman showed impressive pace throughout the qualifying and lingered in the top positions with every lap.

On his final effort at the end of Q3, Gasly vaulted from third to first to secure the fastest lap, pipping George Russell to pole position.

The gap between the top two read just over half a tenth, leaving Alpine to celebrate the first pole position as a manufacturer.

With Gasly and Russell occupying the top two spots, Oscar Piastri found himself in third.

The Australian may count himself lucky to be there after he was forced to abandon his final lap after running deep into the opening corner.

However, Piastri is facing a trip to the stewards' room, as he is under investigation for impeding Liam Lawson during the session.

Fourth and fifth on Sunday's grid will be the Ferrari duo, with Charles Leclerc getting the better of Lewis Hamilton this ocassion.

Max Verstappen was sixth for Red Bull as he once again voiced his unhappiness with the car's balance throughout the session.

Championship leader Kimi Antonelli ended the session in seventh place but will line up at the back of the grid on Sunday due to an engine penalty.

It allows Franco Colapinto to be bumped up a spot on the grid, with Alpine's day made even better by having a double top 10 appearance.

Lando Norris suffered a disappointing session in ninth, as he only marginally managed to outpace the leading Racing Bulls' entry of Arvid Lindblad.

Gabriel Bortoleto came agonisingly close to making it through to Q3 and dumping Hamilton out, but had to settle for 11th - 0.001s down on the seven-time champion.

Oliver Bearman was 12th for Haas, ahead of the second Audi of Nico Hulkenberg.

Liam Lawson also failed to make it through into the top 10 for Red Bull following his incident with Piastri.

Nevertheless, Lawson will start Sunday's race towards the back of the grid after taking on a grid penalty for a fresh engine.

Carlos Sainz was 15th, while Esteban Ocon was the slowest of the pack in Q2.

Yuki Tsunoda suffered a fuel leak in the build-up to the session, denting his preperations.

How costly it proved to be remains to be seen, but the Japanese driver could not escape the Q1 drop zone and ended the day in 17th.

Alex Albon was 18th in the second Williams car, while Valtteri Bottas once again managed to outpace Sergio Perez at Cadillac.

It left Aston Martin to once again round out the timesheet, despite the upgrades that have come for the chassis and engine at recent rounds.

Fernando Alonso was 21st for the Silverstone-based squad, while Lance Stroll was the slowest at the end of Q1.
