Liam Lawson issues concerning response to potential F1 regulations change

Possible changes to the F1 regulations from 2027 have been a big talking point, but Liam Lawson has raised another area which needs addressing.

Liam Lawson has insisted that just changing the power unit ratio between internal combustion and electrical power is "not enough" to solve the current Formula 1 regulations.

The current 50/50 split has received significant criticism within the F1 paddock, with Max Verstappen having stressed that he will quit the sport if it is not changed for 2027.

Talks are ongoing over a possible change to a 60/40 power unit split from next year in favour of internal combustion. However, according to reports, Ferrari and Audi are against this until 2028.

F1's current rules have seen qualifying laps conducted not flat out, with significant energy management and lift and coast during races—factors which have never been seen to the same extent as this season.

While Lawson is in favour of a move to 60/40 next season, he does not believe it will solve all the problems with the current regulations.

In the eyes of the Racing Bulls driver, changes would also be needed to increase downforce, not just the power unit.

Asked if moving to a 60/40 power unit split will solve F1's problems, Lawson told select media, including RacingNews365: "I think it's more than that.

"In my head, I would say it's more. It's great that we're making the step, but I think it's more than that.

"The cars are a lot lower on downforce than they were in the past, almost to compensate for the lack of battery power that we have.

"So, yeah, honestly, it wouldn't be fair for me to say no until we drive them, but in my head, it's probably still not enough."
