Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda find common ground over 'crazy' question

Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda have clashed on track lately, but are aligned on what they must do in the quest to retain seats in the Red Bull family.

Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda agree that all they can do is "extract everything" and "maximise" every weekend as they wait to find out their Red Bull futures.

Both drivers are vying for a contract extension with the joint Milton Keynes-Faenza squad, but it is becoming increasingly apparent that only one will survive the winter.

With Isack Hadjar slated to replace Tsunoda at Red Bull, and Arvid Lindblad potentially in line for a Racing Bulls seat, it could come down to a direct fight between the Japanese driver and Lawson for the other seat at the Alan Permane-led team.

A decision on the team's two driver line-ups was expected following this weekend's Mexico City Grand Prix, following remarks made by Helmut Marko.

However, Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies has rowed back on that stance, insisting there is "no rush" and that they want to give the drivers as much time as possible to make their cases.

When Lawson and Tsunoda were asked whether they would prefer a quick outcome or for the call to be made following the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, both maintained that it does not change how they approach each round.

Speaking to media, including RacingNews365, the New Zealander replied: "I have no idea, to be honest. I haven’t thought about that specifically.

"I feel like if it was something that was clear and the decision was made, I feel like we probably would know, and maybe that would be better.

"But at the same time, I think the main thing is it just doesn’t really change how we approach each weekend.

"So at the moment, as we’re obviously still waiting on everything that’s going to happen, I think our approaches will just stay the same and try and extract everything out of each weekend."

Tsunoda's view

Tsunoda highlighted his experience of the process whilst explaining that his "only focus" is delivering as best he can on track.

The 25-year-old was, however, also quick to label the query a "crazy question" before expanding on his position.

"I’ve been in this Red Bull family for five years, and I know how it works here," he replied.

"I’ve been in this kind of situation pretty much every year so far. I know how it’s handled in Red Bull. So I just keep proving myself and maximise the opportunity.

"My most important thing is I’m very grateful for this opportunity that I’ve been given, and I just have to maximise it as much as possible. That’s the only focus I’m doing."
