Lewis Hamilton has taken full responsibility for a false start at the British Grand Prix, which effectively ended his hopes of victory.
The seven-time world champion started in third but overtook Kimi Antonelli going into the first corner, moving him into second behind Charles Leclerc.
Unfortunately, Hamilton could not match Leclerc's pace and quickly dropped backwards, before it was revealed that he had a five-second time penalty.
Hamilton moved before the lights went out, with the punishment which was served at his first pit stop having dropped him to sixth.
He overtook Max Verstappen on the circuit, while both Mercedes encountered different issues. In the end, Hamilton salvaged second but is under investigation for an alleged yellow flag infringement.
"Firstly I have to say congratulations to Charles," said Hamilton. "Winning this grand prix is a great experience and this is a great result for our team. So congratulations to our team.
"I just didn't have it today. I jumped the start, got a five second penalty, but Charles had the pace on me today. I struggled with the balance of the car but I gave it everything and I'm grateful to be up here."
While Hamilton is at risk of losing his podium, the 41-year-old does believe Silverstone has proven that Ferrari has what it takes to fight the Silver Arrows.
Asked if Ferrari can fight Mercedes, Hamilton responded: "It looks like it. I'm not really sure what happened to Kimi. The team is doing a phenomenal job.
"We have some work still to do to really close the gap on pure performance but look at these results. Two wins for the team this year, this is fantastic."
