Lewis Hamilton sent bleak 'F1 limit' warning

Christian Danner has weighed in on Lewis Hamilton's F1 future after Ralf Schumacher offered a forthright assessment of the situation at Ferrari.

Former F1 driver Christian Danner believes Lewis Hamilton may have reached his natural racing limits, supporting the recent claim by Ralf Schumacher that the seven-time drivers' champion "doesn't stand a chance" against Charles Leclerc.

Hamilton appears to have found his rhythm at Ferrari, showing marked improvement over his difficult debut campaign with Scuderia.

However, whilst closer to Leclerc, the 41-year-old continues to be a shade off his team-mate, with the Monégasque driver consistently outperforming the 105-time grand prix winner across most sessions.

In Miami, Leclerc finished ahead of Hamilton in every session bar the grand prix itself, where his 20-second time penalty cost him a clean sweep, having taken the chequered flag first.

"Leclerc is already state-of-the-art, a top-class driver, and at some point, you just can't keep up anymore," said Danner to AvD Motorsport Magazine.

The German, who raced in F1 in the mid-to-late 1980s, referenced conversations he had with another former F1 driver, Gerhard Berger, to illustrate his point.

"Gerhard admitted to me that he had reached an age where he simply couldn't do it anymore. He was still fast and won a grand prix, but that 'extra little bit of something' was no longer there," he added.

Expanding on his argument, Danner detailed how it becomes more and more difficult to achieve flow state, where driving becomes instinctive and not a conscious activity.

"Everyone eventually reaches their limit, but to go beyond it, you need that flow," he said. "That moment when everything clicks; when you realise: I've turned into the corner, and without even thinking about it, I've already anticipated the next corner, executed it, and am already back at full throttle.

"These are things that, as you get older, you simply can't manage so easily anymore."

In Danner's view, natural responses become increasingly elusive with age, creating performance gaps against younger rivals — and it is not isolated to Hamilton.

Whilst acknowledging that 44-year-old Fernando Alonso continues performing excellently against Lance Stroll at Aston Martin, Danner suggested even the two-time champion would likely face similar struggles when measured against Leclerc.

"If you put him next to Leclerc, it could very well look the same as it does now with Lewis," he stated. "Most likely that is the normal development at the end of a career."
