Lewis Hamilton receives damning F1 forecast: 'He doesn't stand a chance'

Ralf Schumacher has delivered a stark assessment of Lewis Hamilton's prospects at Ferrari, insisting the seven-time F1 drivers' champion should consider retirement despite improved form this season.

The 41-year-old has enjoyed a resurgence in 2026, securing a podium finish in China and appearing more comfortable with the latest generation of Formula 1 machinery, demonstrating considerably better pace than in his difficult first campaign at the Scuderia.

However, Schumacher believes the age factor will ultimately prove decisive in Hamilton's battle against team-mate Charles Leclerc and, by extension, his championship aspirations.

"I have to be honest and say that Hamilton is certainly in better shape this year, there's no doubt about that," he said on Sky Sports Germany's Backstage Boxengasse podcast.

"But you also have to admit that he, over the whole year and in the long term, doesn't stand a chance against Leclerc. That's just how it is."

The former Jordan, Williams and Toyota driver extended his critique to include Fernando Alonso, suggesting both veterans should step aside for younger talent.

"It's time," he added. "I wouldn't like to hear that either. But Hamilton, and Fernando Alonso just as well, they've had a wonderful time in Formula 1, but I think it's time for both of them to vacate the cockpit at the end of the year to give younger drivers a chance."

Schumacher acknowledged his position might prove controversial but remained resolute in his stance.

"I know that some people will hate me for this again, but Hamilton has achieved everything he can achieve for himself," he said. "He's one of the most successful, or according to the English, even the most successful driver in Formula 1. We would rather say: one of the most successful drivers, and he has also earned that title."

The 50-year-old praised Hamilton's recent performances whilst maintaining his overall position on the Briton's future prospects.

"Even with what he's showing again this year, that comeback is wonderful. But everything has an end, only a sausage has two," Schumacher joked. "That's why I'm saying it now: I think it's time to give the youth a chance as well."

The six-time grand prix winner identified Oliver Bearman as a potential successor, concluding by saying, "Oliver Bearman has really earned the chance to step into Ferrari.

"If he gets the chance, he will certainly do it. That will be a challenge for Leclerc, I'm quite sure of that."
