Lewis Hamilton hits back after Ferrari Baku disappointment: 'Why would I agree?'

Lewis Hamilton has hit back at being asked if Ferrari has fallen to fourth in the pecking order following a disappointing Azerbaijan Grand Prix, questioning "why would I agree?" 

Hamilton finished sixth in Baku, unable to make progress on the circuit's long straights as Ferrari's power unit deficit continued to bite.

The seven-time world champion qualified sixth, but slipped away from the podium fight once the lights went out. 

Hamilton crossed the line 22.382s behind race winner Russell, with Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar completing the podium places for Red Bull.

Baku's 2.2-kilometre full-throttle blast has proven a brutal proving ground for straight-line speed all season, and Ferrari's known top-speed shortfall left Hamilton stranded between cars rather than in genuine contention.

Briefly discussing his race, Hamilton told select media, including RacingNews365: "Yeah, I was in no man's time most of the time."

That isolation reflected a wider issue for the Scuderia. Ferrari has publicly acknowledged a straight-line speed deficit this season, with technical director-level admissions pointing to power unit shortfalls compared to Mercedes, even as the SF-26 chassis remains competitive through the corners.

Asked how it felt not being able to do anything when defending on the straight, Hamilton replied: "It's not great, but it is what it is. There's not very much I can do."

The result leaves Ferrari facing familiar questions about where it sits in the constructors' fight, with Mercedes and Red Bull both clearly ahead on pace at Baku.

Ferrari has continued development work on the SF-26 rather than pivoting fully to 2027, with a further upgrade package expected before the season is out. 

But Hamilton was in no mood to accept a bleaker reading of the team's current form when it was put to him that Ferrari had dropped to fourth in the order.

Discussing whether Ferrari has slipped to fourth in the pecking order, Hamilton snapped back: "What's the importance of that? Why would I agree with it?

"I mean, I don't know where we are. Third or second? I don't know. We're obviously not the second quickest at the moment, but we're ahead of McLaren today, so maybe we're third."
