Lando Norris ground to a halt early in the second practice session for the Monaco Grand Prix after a sudden shutdown.
Exiting the tunnel in seventh gear, the steering wheel of Norris's MCL40 machine suddenly went blank during the braking phase for the sea-front chicane.
The world champion then abandoned the stricken car, with the virtual safety car deployed as marshals recovered the car.
Speaking on Sky Sports F1, CEO Zak Brown reported that the first indications were that a battery issue had struck Norris's car.
Prior to the session, McLaren had fitted new power unit ancillary components to Norris's car.
