Lando Norris names 'game over' fear after commanding Hungarian GP win

Lando Norris has described his feeling of "game over" after his first lap mistake which handed Oscar Piastri control of the Hungarian GP. 

Norris claimed his first victory as world champion in Budapest by 15.0s from Max Verstappen after a commanding performance, but only after an incident involving Piastri and Sainz opened the door for the Briton to pit and emerge ahead. 

Norris, who felt he had performance over Piastri, ultimately pulled clear of the Australian before his retirement with gearbox failure, and scored a dominant win - his first since the 2025 Sao Paulo GP and just his third podium of the season. 

However, at the start, he lost the lead to Piastri at Turn 2 after a snap of oversteer, and was behind on-track until the Piastri/Sainz incident just before Norris's second stop on Lap 39. 

"I don't know what happened, I just kept losing the rear, had three or four snaps, it felt horrible, and Oscar did a good job to cut back and get past," Norris said.

"I think I was just a bit wide in the dirt, and game over for the first lap. I was pushing like hell to try and force him into a mistake, and my pace today was probably some of the best pace I've ever had. The car was beautiful to drive, and I felt very confident. 

"So, a great race, and to get it back in terms of going long, which is certainly not what I was expecting. But the pace was so good, I could always extend the stints and fresh tyres, and then that won me the race. 

"The team did a lot of effort, a lot of work to get the upgraded car here. It's obviously worked well this weekend. Considering how good it felt today, I certainly want to believe that we can continue winning; there's going to be moments we're going to struggle more, moments that might be even better.

"But we know this track is a good one for us. It's probably one of my best-suited tracks of the year. 

"I certainly believe we can still win races. I knew it was coming, and the team have put so much work in to make it a car that can finally win again. It's nice to be able to do it for them."
