Oscar Piastri has stated his clash with Carlos Sainz was “one of the dumbest things” he's ever seen.
The duo came together while Piastri was fighting for victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix, having led through the opening phase of the event.
After making a pit stop, Piastri closed up to the back of Carlos Sainz, but in his attempt to lap him, contact was made between the pair.
It cost Piastri valuable seconds to team-mate Lando Norris, who soon after made a pit stop and moved into the net lead.
The incident sparked outrage over the team radio from Piastri, who was still highly critical of Sainz after the race.
“For me, there’s no excuse at all,” Piastri told Viaplay. “That’s got to be one of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen on a race track.
“I don’t really care what excuse you give.”
Piastri went on to retire from the race as an apparent gearbox issue forced him to park up on the side of the road.
Norris went on to seal McLaren's first win of the season, but Piastri felt he was in a strong position to take the victory before his incidents.
“It's definitely a lost chance, yes,” he added.
“The pace wasn't great at all on the hard tyres, but I felt like as long as I held track position, I had a decent chance of hanging on to the end.
“It wasn't going to be pretty, but I felt like it was possible. From that point on, pretty much everything that could have gone wrong, even the things you never think of, did go wrong.”
