Lando Norris has suggested McLaren's dominance over the F1 field could now hinder his route to a maiden title this year.
The battle between Norris and team-mate Oscar Piastri has been tight all year, however Norris was dealt a significant blow last time out at the Dutch Grand Prix.
A late engine issue forced him to retire from the race, and with Piastri taking the chequered flag in first, Norris now sits 34 points behind his title rival.
While the gap is a significant one with nine grands prix weekends remaining, Norris is retaining belief he can overcome the deficit without having to rely on misfortunes for Piastri.
“In the end, if he has done a better job, I give credit to him, and I'll say 'he's done a better job',” Norris said in response to a question from RacingNews365.
“That's how I am. I don't wish [for] it. I just wish that I can find that last little bit, I can still win the championship without anything happening.
“That's the way I wish to do it.”
McLaren has been in a dominant position all year and has taken 1-2 finishes at almost half of the races so far this season.
Having been rarely challenged at the front of the field by a rival team, Norris stated it is a factor that will pose an obstacle in his quest to close the gap.
“It would certainly make my life easier if there were some more drivers in between us every now and then,” Norris added.
“The thing is, we're so dominant as a team that it almost makes my life harder.
“So that's really the most frustrating part of it all. Otherwise, it's still to an extent 'may the best driver win'.
“If that's the case at the end of the season, then I'll respect that.”
